MS 93-135 consists of papers of Dave Dempsey, documenting his environmental work during the Blanchard administration (1983-91). Includes a personal account (1992) of his employment as an environmental advisor to Governor Blanchard, employment that included writing the governor's speeches and issuing press releases relating to environmental issues. Includes documentation of the controversy involving hydrocarbon development in the Nordhouse Dunes Federal Wilderness Area, north of Lundington on the shore of Lake Michigan (1984-87). His personal account recalls his success in advising Governor Blanchard to support the National Wilderness Act and the Sand Dune Protection Act, and conflicts within the state government regarding the appointment of the Director of the Department of Natural Resources by the Natural Resource Commission, and public criticisms of state policy by the Toxic Substance Control Commission. Also includes material documenting sand dune protection policy and legislation (1983-87).
